About 2 years ago I overcame the biggest business setback I had ever encountered.
Once I realized that I had emerged from the abyss, I was so thankful that I had to write about my experience and how I did it. The crazy thing was that, I came up with the framework for the solution to my problem while I was in the climax of the setback.
Once it came to me, I believed in it so much that I had to use it on myself. But there was one thing…It was a big risk because it challenged everything I had previously understood about how to make money.
Either I was going to completely fail when I implemented it or I was going to soar and build my dream business (fortunately, it was the latter)
Let me start from the beginning…
My business, Better Than Success is a media company that helps first generation entrepreneurs and leaders to defy all odds, achieve every goal they set for themselves, and win in every way possible through education, events, and communities.
The Never Ending Business Drought
The business didn’t always look that way though. We actually first started out as just a web and graphic design business. Most of our revenue came from web design and for some reason for a few months in 2016, we experienced a serious drought.
The Standard Web Design Business Model
In the past, the business model worked like this: I was the sales person and project manager. I closed new clients by going to professional events and getting referrals. Then I gathered info about the clients needs and I disbursed that info to the proper designer on my staff. We would get paid half up and the other half when the work was complete.
This is pretty standard for a design and branding agency.
But what happens when you have a drought?
The natural response is to hustle, work harder, go to more networking events, meet more professionals, post more on social media, ask your previous clients for referrals, and/or spend some money on a marketing campaign.
And guess what…I did all that. But the drought still remained.
Business was slow and I was Frustrated with a capital “F”. Did I mention that while I was trying to make enough money to pay the business’ bills, I was also trying to save money to buy my first real estate rental?
Nothing was working. And I wasn’t getting any closer to fulfilling my real estate investment dreams.
I had to rethink this whole situation and my belief systems.
Does Hustling Really Work?
My belief system said “hustle hard and I will grow my business”.
I was no different that any one else, hustling hard is what we are all taught.
But I thought about it…Almost everyone that I knew that prided themselves on hustling were BROKE. Think about it, I bet you can say the same too.
So what if this hustling model was wrong? What if I didn’t hustle hard? What if I took all the energy I spent on going to events and posting on social media and redirected that energy into resting and putting systems in place so that I didn’t have to chase the money with so much fervor.
I decided to get focused on adding revenue streams to my business that didn’t require so much work.
I pulled ALL my resources together and leveraged what I had to automate the revenue process.
The 3 Simple Business Activities That Increased Our Revenue by 50%
I added 3 new business activities that increased our revenue by 50% last year:
Launch a Podcast
We launched a podcast and as a result, our potential clients came to me (rather than me go to find them) when they tuned into the podcast.
Launch a Community
We launched a Real Estate Club and as a result, I learned about real estate investing at lightening fast speeds while we made money on recurring membership fees by facilitating the group. We launched the Better Than Success Real Estate League in November 2016
Launch a Media Company
We launched our media company that caters to information-hungry-entrepreneurs like me and you. We produce content and put on large scale events that generate large lump sums of cash every few months.
It Took a While to Implement Certain Business Activities But They Worked
Although this was great, it took a while for me to even figure out that I needed a podcast, a real estate club, and a media company to make this whole thing work.
It also took a while to implement all this but it worked!!!
We are in our second year of this new business model and we haven’t had any droughts since. In fact we have been growing exponentially. Because of this, I finally had enough money and time to start investing in real estate.
How did I figure out exactly which business activities would lead to this new reality for me?
I Stopped Hustling and Developed a Customized Plan
I stopped hustling. in fact I used a model that I developed called “the AntiHustle”.
AntiHustle:
to work with God toward one’s purpose with boldness, patience, talent, skill, discipline, strategy, faith, and grace.
I literally laid out all my talents and skills, and strategically used them to develop a customized plan. In other words, my 3 new business activities work for me but probably won’t work for you.
In other words, the decision to implement the podcast, the real estate club and the media company were all based on my talents and skills. But if you were to use The AntiHustle, then you would uncover the exact custom business activities that would make your life easier while bringing you the revenue you deserve.
The AntiHustle
My talents and skills made is easy as pie to implement the the new activities. This way I was no longer ‘hustling”. I was doing the things that came natural to me. I’m no longer scrambling to close deals but rather, I’m just being me and the sales are pouring in. I was living in the AntiHustle.
This worked so well for me that I wrote a book about it called the AntiHustle.
365 Days to Make Six Figures in Your First Year as an Entrepreneur
In the book I take readers on a 365-day journey to make six figures in their first year in business.
The book has been changing people’s lives and their businesses around the world.

-@flytiy
“I was reading #theantihustle by @nicolepurvy last night and came across a section on passion vs. purpose. It made me think back to a conversation I had with my Mama. When we we’re told by society to follow our passions we are really being conditioned to follow our emotions. Most times they’re misleading fleshly desires. We should instead seek to be aligned with our purpose. Something that can only be realized in those quiet moments alone, mediating, and/or in prayer. Don’t take my word for it, try it with me!”
